GITA GOPINATH, THE LADY BEHIND IMF.

Ever heard the phrase, what a man can do a woman can do better? Meet Professor Gita Gopinath, the Chief Economist and Director of the Research Department at the International Monetary Fund(IMF) since 2019. Her life and education background Gita Gopinath was born on 8th December, 1971 in Calcutta, India. She has BA degree in Economics from University of Delhi and Masters from the same university. She got her second Masters degree in Economics from University of Washington. She has a PhD in Economics in the field of International Macroeconomics and Trade from Princeton University.  Gita Gopinath, Chief Economist IMF. Career She has worked as Assistant Professor of economics at the University of Chicago's Booth of Business. She is currently John Zwaanstra professor of International Studies and Economics at Harvard University though on leave to serve as Chief Economist under IMF. THE ROLE OF COOPERATIVES IN SHAPING UP OUR ECONOMY

  Introduction According to NIC, a cooperative society refers to a voluntary association of individuals having common needs who join hands for the achievement of common economic interest. Most cooperative societies offer their products to their members and others don't serve non-members. Classifications of cooperatives Agricultural Marketing Societies. Consumer cooperatives. Savings and credit cooperative. The processing cooperative. Transport cooperative. The insurance cooperative. Housing cooperative. Contributions of cooperatives to our  GDP Cooperatives contribute significant amount to our GDP. According to SID, cooperatives contribute approximately 45% of our GDP and 31% of national savings and deposits. They also create and maintain employment. Introduction   Agriculture is the backbone of our economy. It contributes approximately 26% of our GDP and another 27% indirectly through linkages according FAO. It employs 70% of Kenya's population in rural setting. The most valuable agricultural export is tea. Kenya  is the largest exporter of tea accounting close to 22%  of the total world tea exports. Tea sector contributes 4% of our country's GDP and 26% of Kenya's total export earnings. Challenges in tea sector In the last 5 years, tea sector has been facing numerous challenges and hence farmers have been receiving low pay from their farm produce. Key among them include:  Corruption by KTDA officials. This has led to low bonuses which does not correspond to the cost of inputs and labor. Hence loss to farmers. Unfavorable weather conditions.                           What is avocado farming?     Avocado farming refers to the growing of avocado either for domestic consumption or for sell. According to cropnuts article, avocado farming in Kenya and around the globe is gaining prominence because of the nutritious benefits. Kenya is ranked 6th largest producer of avocado in the world.                 History of avocado farming in Kenya. Avocado plants were first introduced in Kenya in 1930s by portuguese (Griesbach, 1985 and 2005).                                                          AROUND KENYA.                I miss those days when the only minibus   making Siongiroi-Chebole-Kaplong-Kericho route was "Around Kenya". Unlike today, owning a car then was considered for the privileged. Infact, those who owned were highly respected and viewed as high class individuals, they were modern days " dynasties". Around Kenya had its own uniqueness; apart from the rough hoarse sound it made as it negotiate the gradient, the speed in which it was driven, only God knows. First, you could see red cloud of dust appear one kilometre away, then you knew Around Kenya was approaching.           Around Kenya made me occasionally visit my grandmother who lives in Kapoleseroi during holidays in my boyhood.
