AVOCADO FARMING IN BOMET.

                         What is avocado farming?
    Avocado farming refers to the growing of avocado either for domestic consumption or for sell. According to cropnuts article, avocado farming in Kenya and around the globe is gaining prominence because of the nutritious benefits. Kenya is ranked 6th largest producer of avocado in the world.
                History of avocado farming in Kenya.
Avocado plants were first introduced in Kenya in 1930s by portuguese (Griesbach, 1985 and 2005). Commercial cultivation of avocado started in the 1960s and 23t of avocado were exported to Europe in 1970(Griesbach, 1985 and 2005) reports that the national development plan of 1974 included a programme to increase avocado hectarage from 150 to 1450 by 1982 to meet the local and export demand.

   Avocado is one of the most important commercial fruit in Bomet County for local and export market. Approximately 49,470 farmers across the county engage in avacado farming with current production at 2000 Metric tonnes over two harvest seasons annually, bringing in an income of approximately 100M to our farmers.
