Joseph Tchundjang Pouemi

When the story of African economies will be written, the name of former Cameroonian economist, the late Joseph Tchundjang Pouemi will always feature.

His life history

Born on  November 13th, 1937 to Bemileke family in Bangaou Village, West Cameroon. After obtaining his baccalaureate and becoming primary teacher, he relocated to France, Clemont-Ferrant University to study Mathematics, Law and Economics.  Afterwards, he worked as Economic Advisor in Cameroon and Code De' Ivore. in 1977, he joined IMF but soon quit after disagreeing with its policies. He returned to Cameroon and published  a book; Money, Servitude and Freedom in 1980. Paul Biya appointed him head of the University of Douala in August 1983, but fired him a year later.  Sadly on December 27, 1984 he was found dead in a hotel room.
